what type saddle to get?

I just started dressage lessons, but mostly want to ride trails. I love the way the county warmblood saddle I take lessons on sits me, and so am thinking it would be nice to have a dressage saddle for the trails. Also, my horse is very wide, no withers, and to get a good fit on him is really why I need a new saddle right now.

I've been reading about the Duett Companion saddle and the Wintec Isabell. Does anyone have any comments about these? Or suggestions for the type of saddle I ought to get? In the county warmblood, I'm riding in an 18 extra wide, so I was thinking I'd go for that size in whatever kind I get.

Hi Bella,

You have to look for a saddle that fits both you and your horse.  In general, many people seek the assitance of their trainers who often have a lot of experience in recommending saddles brands, types, etc.  You can also consult with a saddle fitter to help you get the right type of saddle that it both right for you and your horse once you have it narrowed down a bit.

Having said that, the Wintec might be a good choice for you based on what you have described.  They make the Isabel and a regular dressage saddle as well.  Keep in mind that the various saddles may have the same seat size but feel completely differently due to factors such as how deep the seat is the twist and other things.  Be sure to put whatever you want to buy on your horse if you can so you can sit in it a get a good feel for it.

I just sold a Hennig dressage saddle and now I am looking at an Albion SLK.  I have an older Neidersuss another Hennig and a few others, to give you an idea.  My wife has a few students that use the Albions  as well.  You want something that will be a good fit for you on trail rides so that is probably a big factor to consider.  I have never ridden in a County or a Duett so cannot say much on those.
