I recently did a horse trekking trip for two persons with the Bishkek based company Dostuck trekking which turned out to be a big mistake.
Here are a few reason why:
- Our guide was very helpful, but had never been in the mountain and could not even get on her horse by herself. She relied exclusively on the local "groomer". This caused lots of delays and uncertainties, and could have turned out fatal if a problem had occurred.
- The reality of our trip (20-30 km in extreme terrain) was very distant from the programme on paper (10-15 km in easy terrain).
- This particular agency is simply offering services it is unable to provide. It seems there is a lack of qualified horse ridding guides.
- We complained to the owner once we got back at the camp. He simply pretended not to understand what we were saying and ended up threatening us and swearing at us, though we stayed very much polite.
- The name of the company 'Dostuck Trekking Kyrgyz-British Joint Company' mislead us to believe they would offer western standards and the feel of kyrgyz culture. In fact the offered neither: the company is exclusively staffed by Russians, and the 'British' element is just, according to one of the employees, a remote Russian investor based in Britain, acting as a tax evasion device.
On the whole we enjoyed the Kyrgyz mountains very much, but we would not recommend Dostuck Trekking to anyone.
