Stop horse slaughtering!

Posted by Andrew Horse at September 29. 2006

Hi, everyone.

Unless you’ve been riding entirely too much you know that there
is a big issue for horse lovers before the Senate right now. Three
foreign-owned horse slaughter plants here in the USA
are killing American horses to sell to diners in Belgium,
France and Japan. They
kill the horses, harvest the meat, and then ship it overseas. There is a bill
before the Senate right now to ban this practice in all 50 states.

Me and some friends are asking people to send an email to
their senators asking them to push this bill through and vote to end horse
slaughtering. The bill has already passed the US House of Representatives and
this is the last hurdle before it goes to the President for his signature.

A common misperception is that the horses are old or sick -
not true.  Many are under 2 years old and
healthy, and are sold simply for money.

Here's how you can help - everyone needs to contact their
senators and indicate they don't want our horses dying to feed other countries.

Go to http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ and type in
your zip code. Send an email to both of your US senators and tell them to stop
this terrible practice. The vote is coming before the Senate next week so
please do it NOW!  :) Thanks!!!

And here is a blog that we set up so you can read more
information about it:

:) Thanks!!!

I absolutely LOVE horses. I currently have three. One of my best friends has ten. I board them at her farm. I just wanted to clarify that before I reply to this post. I can remember when I first learned about horse slaughter for human consumption. I was appalled!! I thought, "What a disgusting practice to eat pets"! After careful consideration, I have changed my position. I started wondering where the unwanted horses would go. I know for a fact that the horses are not always old or sick. I have been to the "loose horses" auction, aka the meat pen. Most of the horses were NOT old or sick, that's true. They were young, healthy looking and pretty. I stood there, in with the meat buyers. To this day I have only seen two ladies there that were from a horse rescue. I saw the horses scramble out of the pen after being hit on the butt with a cane, slide into the slippery isleway with a terrified look in their eye and run toward a journey to their fate in the back of a semi trailer. I wondered who owned the horses here, that they would throw them away like trash? I thought, these are the same people that would be forced to do something else with them if forced to. What would their options be? I think some of them would shoot them with a gun and dispose of their bodies. Some may not be able to afford to care for their horse(s). Maybe they would starve. Maybe they would be sold to a meat buyer on the black market where there are no regualtions. Has anyone made provisions for where the unwanted horses would go? Who would take care of them?
I do not support horse slaughter for human consumption. I do support making provisions for the horses that cannot go to slaughter. What is the solution? Until there is a solution, I have created my own solution. I can afford to have horses for my own personal enjoyment. I can afford many things that I don't need. Therefore, I purchased a horse at this auction. She is a beautiful Belgian mare, 4 YEARS OLD! I won her at $300. She is healthy and well-mannered. She is currently getting retrained to drive and ride. If I couldn't afford a trainer, I certainly could afford to (at least) feed her and let her live at my friend's house. I think that's a much nicer fate than being shot in the head with a bolt and being someone's dinner in Europe. My friend bought two horses from the meat pen. One is a coming two year old paint gelding who someone has started and the other is a red roan mare who is dead broke for riding. THAT'S how you make a difference.  Unless you plan on putting all the unwanted horses (that will be out there if the law passes) in your backyard and feeding them, DO something and go get one or two!!! Then tell your friends to go get one or two!!!Then have them tell their friends to go get one or two!!!

And just what do you plan to do with the 90,000+ horses that are slaughtered every year if they stop slaughtering??

I think there are far to many "backyard breeders" resulting in an over population of horses. My horse was purchased by a killer buyer, at his mothers side at auction, and was on his way to Dallas to be processed. Thankfully he and five other weanlings were sold to a man in houston who I bought him from. His mother was no doubt delivered to Dallas. He is so sweet and loving, he went from a wild eyed colt to a calm loving pet within weeks.

Any ways I think people should take horse breeding more seriously and instead of introducing more horses into the world they should go buy a baby at auction and give it a second chance at life.

The fact of the matter is that there is an overpopulation of horses - just as there are dogs, cats, and virtually every other animal man has domesticated.  We euthanize unwanted dogs and cats everyday, and advertise to spay and neuter.  However, ppl do not so we still continue to euthanize these animals everyday.  If we did not, there would not be enough food or shelter to sustain all these animals and they would die from other means (starvation, disease, etc.).  While I agree that ppl breed horses in an effort for profit, this does not happen nearly as much as unwanted litters of cats and dogs.  Many times, horses are put up for slaughter b/c they are old, sick, unable to be ridden due to injury, or have other health issues.  Many times owners get in bad positions due to their own health, divorce, bankruptcy, etc., and can no longer afford to pay for a horse.  Not allowing horse slaughter does the same thing that would happen if we did not euthanize cats and dogs: there will still be overpopulation & it will increase with unwanted and sick horses left to stand, horses will still starve, die from disease, be turned out from pastures and unclaimed, etc.  It just isn't smart practice to end slaughter.  We all love our horses and we let that blind us to the fact that all horses aren't OUR horses, aren't safe, healthy, viable equines and need to be put down.  I know ppl who say to euthanize them like dogs and cats.  Many ppl cannot afford the bill of having a horse buried or rent the land they have the horse on and have nowhere to bury it.  I have euthanized a horse and buried it.  His leg was broked and unable to be fixed.  I could not bear to have him suffer through the trip to auction and then to slaughter.  He was covered in sweat, could hardly stand, but he walked with me to the back pasture where I put him down and paid to have him buried in our creek bed.  Had he had something else such as being lame, too old and unable to eat, etc., I would have sent him to slaughter and seen him go to some other use.

I have read the big long answer buy another person and totally agree with her. They tried this in California and it DOES NOT work. If a person has a horse and they cannot afford to feed it and they cannot sell it what are they to do with it??

You have to answer this question before you can stop the slaughtering. Thanks for the short cut though I can tell my congressmen to not support your bill.

If you want to do something to help the horses, stop the backyard breeders who just breed to have a baby.  Stop all the Thorough bred racers who breed tons of horses a year and then just get rid of them because they are not "fast enough".  Lets start there first.  Lets regulate the slaughter industries.  Unfortunately there is nothing wrong with eating horse meat.  (I dont eat it--dont get me wrong--but I look at them as a pet, not food)  People eat beef and such so horse is not much different.  We just look at horses differently.  I think with all the unwanted horses out there and what happens to them that maybe regulated slaughter houses are not the worse things that can happen to them.  Watch animal cops houston if you need any evidence of what bad things can happen to unwanted and uncared for horses.

When we here of somebody breeding their mare cuz they want a baby--we need to say something to them and start little.  I dont say nobody should breed horses, just have a better reason.  I have 3 horses and I have made preperation for all three of them if something happens to me.  I dont want my horses (or animals) "having to be disposed of" if something happens to me.  How many people think to take care of the animals in their lifes in the event something happens to them.  We as people have domesticated these animals and we need to make the right decisions for them also.
