Fraud and Spammers
All advertisers should be very wary of potential buyers of their horses and other items online
Unfortunalty we must all be aware of fraud attempts and spam online. We are a horse community and I think the best way to deal with this type of thing is with education and discussion. If you get a fraud message (or think it may be an attempt at fraud) from someone, click "ADD COMMENT" at the bottem of this article and tell others about it. Copy the message body and paste it in a posting. Please leave out email addresses. These people will stop sending fraud messages when people stop responding to them. Don't respond to these messages. Just delete them!
Be aware of the general tone of the emails that the scammers typically send out. To start off with here are a few examples below. They often involve a forged cashiers check or over payment so you can give them back some real money, etc. They usually are not hard to spot as so many of them sound the same and rarely do they seem interested in your horse specifically- just how they will pay.
Please reply to this news posting with examples you may have received so everyone is aware of how they are worded. Also note that these often originate from free email systems like these do:
Obvious fraud email #1:
"My name is JOHN LUCAS, i was going through the ad listed on www.horse101.com and i saw your advert for the sale of An exceptional dressage import. I 'll like to know if you still have it intact for sale just as the description on the ad stated it, also i will like to know your last asking price and anything new on it, any new pics will do too if you have one.
My means of payment will be through a certified cashiers check, the payment will get to you through my client, it is going to be an over-payment for the horse and the shipping. All you need to do when you get the check is to deposit it in your bank and wait for it to clear with them before you can take your payment for the item out of it and send the balance to my frieght agent so he can come for the pickup.
I believe we need not waste time on this going by how urgrent i'll be needing the horse, so i suggest you get back to me pretty soon even with your information to prompt the mailing and writing of the check.
